A 5 Panel Drug Test is a simple drug test which detects whether or not someone has consumed any drugs recently. The name comes from its ability to detect five different types of chemicals often associated with different drug types.

5 Panel Drug Tests

Negative results of a 5 panel drug test are often part of a job requirement. The 5 panel drug test is one of the most basic and most commonly used types of tests, however, there are many improved versions of the 5 panel drug test such as: the 6, the 8, the 10 and even the 18 panel drug tests.

This drug testing cup can, seemingly, be used everywhere. The drug test may also need to be examined by a medical expert for further confirmation.

Despite its basic purpose, the 5 panel drug test is extremely accurate and widely used. It is also the preferred drug test for DOT testing.

What is a 5 panel drug test

The 5 panel drug test looks like a simple small cup. The only thing that’s required is for the patient to urinate into the test cup. Once the urine sample is provided it comes in contact with the 5 test panels which react according to the structure of the sample.

5 panel urine drug test

The 5 panel urine drug test works by having the patient urinate into the cup. Many drugs and opiates will leave temporary traces which can easily be identified by analyzing a urine sample. Most drugs can be detected through urine for up to seven days after consumption.

5 panel alcohol drug test

The current model of the 5 panel urine test can only detect 5 different types of drugs. It cannot, however, detect traces of alcohol. We are hopeful that the future panel tests will also include alcohol detection alongside drug testing.

How does a 5 panel drug test work

The 5 panel drug test works by having the patient urinate into the testing cup. The drug test cup is equipped with 5 panels, each one carefully constructed to detect a certain type of substance from a urine sample. By coming in contact with the urine sample, the panels will react differently depending on what is located in the sample. If drug traces do not get detected from the sample, no panels should react. If a drug trace is found in the urine sample, the correct panel will react, informing of a positive result.

5 panel drug test cutoff levels

Cutoff levels are used to determine whether or not a patient’s urine sample will yield positive or negative results. The following includes the cutoff levels for the 5 panel drug test:

  • Amphetamines (AMP) – 1,000 ng/mL
  • Opiates (OPI) – 300 ng/mL
  • Cocaine metabolites (COC) – 300 ng/mL
  • Phencyclidine (PCP) – 25 ng/mL
  • Marijuana (THC) – 50 ng/mL

What drugs does a 5 panel drug test cover?

The 5 panel drug test can detect traces of the following drugs:

  • Amphetamines (AMP)
  • Opiates (OPI)
  • Cocaine metabolites (COC)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Marijuana (THC)

How to use 5 panel drug test kits

Step by step guide to using the 5 Panel Drug Test Cup:

  1. The patient will remove the cup from the sealed pouch and proceed to use it as soon as possible
  2. The patient will urinate into the cup after which the cup should be screwed tightly. Once the cup has been screwed, the timer for the test will start
  3. The patient will hand over the cup to the medical expert where the date and the initials will be confirmed, as well as, cap tightness
  4. The peel-off label will be removed
  5. In 2-4 minutes after the peel has been removed the temperature label should change color to green, indicating a proper temperature 90 – 100°F (32 – 38°C)
  6. Results of the drug test will appear in the results area 5 minutes after the test has been performed. The results will be displayed in the shape of color bands in the results area section
  7. In case of positive test results, another method may be sent to a toxicology laboratory to re-confirm the positive test

How accurate is a 5 panel drug test

The 5 panel drug test has an average accuracy of 99%. This particular model of the 5 panel drug test is CLIA waived and FDA approved.

5 panel drug test results explained

The 5 panel drug test results are detected when the 5 panels come in contact with the urine sample. When the panels get in contact with the sample, control lines will flare up depending on the contents of the results.

  • Positive – only the above “C” line appears
  • Negative – both the “C” and the “T” line appear
  • Invalid – only the “T” line appears or no line appears

In case of an invalid result, the patient may be required to retake the test.

DOT drug tests

Ever since 1991, the U.S. congress has issued a law stating that the Department of Transportation (DOT) employees need to pass drug tests. As such, special DOT drug tests have been made in order to accommodate this necessary test for present and future employees of the Department of Transportation.

DOT 5 panel drug test

The DOT 5 panel drug test works the same way as the regular 5 panel drug test. A potential Department of Transportation employee needs to provide a urine sample into the testing cup after which medical experts will examine the contents of the sample. Needless to say, DOT employees must not test positive on the 5 panel drug test.
