For those that need the most advanced and thorough way of testing, the 18 panel drug test is, by far, the most extensive and accurate solution for all your testing needs. The 18 panel drug test can detect 18 chemicals commonly found in more than a dozen illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages.
18 Panel Drug Tests
An interesting aspect about this, rather extensive test, is in its simplicity. The test can, seemingly, be performed anywhere as long as the testee is able to produce a substantial urine sample.
Because of its extensivity the 18 panel drug test is only used for very advanced proceedings such as high-wage employment.
What is 18 Panel Drug Test
Just like most drug tests, the 18 panel drug test consists of a cup. The patient needs to do nothing more but urinate into the cup in order to finish the test. When the 18 panels come in contact with the urine sample, they will react to the structure and display the results with control lines.
18 Panel Urine Drug Test
The 18 panels located in the drug testing cup will come in contact with the urine sample and therefore cause control lines to appear on the panels. Most drugs will leave traces in one’s urine for up to seven days after consumption and the 18 panel drug test is able to detect such traces.
18 Panel Alcohol Drug Test
Unlike most panel drug tests, the 18 panel drug test can also detect traces of alcohol from the urine sample.
How does an 18 Panel Drug test work?
The 18 panel drug test works by having the patient/examinee urinate into the testing cup. The 18 panel drug test is a simple cup with sensitive testing panels on the inside of the cup. By coming in contact with the patient’s urine sample, the panels will react to it by having control lines appear on them. By reading the control lines, it can be determined whether someone tests positive or negative on the drug test.
What Drugs Does an 18 Panel Drug Test cover?
The drugs that are covered on the 18 panel drug test are:
- Amphetamines (AMP)
- Barbiturates (BAR)
- Benzodiazepines (BZO)
- Buperenorphine (BUP)
- Cocaine (COC)
- Ecstasy (MDMA)
- Fentanyl (FYL)
- Marijuana (THC – 50 ng/ml)
- Methadone (MTD)
- Methamphetamine (mAMP/MET)
- Morphine (OPI)
- Oxycodone (OXY)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Nortriptyline (TCA)
- Ethyl -glucuronide (EtG)
- Tramadol (TRA)
- Marijuana (THC – 200 ng/ml)

How to use an 18 panel drug test
Step by step guide to using the 18 Panel Drug Test Cup:
- The patient will remove the cup from the sealed pouch and proceed to use it as soon as possible
- The patient will urinate into the cup after which the cup should be screwed tightly. Once the cup has been screwed, the timer for the test will start
- The patient will hand over the cup to the medical expert where the date and the initials will be confirmed, as well as, cap tightness
- The peel-off label will be removed
- In 2-4 minutes after the peel has been removed the temperature label should change color to green, indicating a proper temperature 90 – 100°F (32 – 38°C)
- Results of the drug test will appear in the results area 5 minutes after the test has been performed. The results will be displayed in the shape of color bands in the results area section
- In case of positive test results, another method may be sent to a toxicology laboratory to re-confirm the positive test
Both positive and negative results of the 18 Panel Drug Test Cup should be viewable within 5 minutes, however, either result will be taken to a medical institution for further testing and re-confirmation. Positive results will take longer than that as they are tested several times to make sure it isn’t a false positive.
18 panel drug test results explained
The 18 panel drug tests will give initial results using control lines laid out on the 18 panels adjacent to the cup. Just like most urine drug tests out there, the panels can potentially display two types of control lines: the “C” line and the “T” line. Depending on the number of lines that appear we can determine the results which go as follows:
- Positive – only the above “C” line appears
- Negative – both the “C” and the “T” line appear
- Invalid – only the “T” line appears or no line appears
In case of an invalid result, the patient may be required to retake the test.
